Hurricane Evacuee Relocation

Across our state and throughout the nation, communities are seeking ways to aid hurricane evacuees. The need is great as we welcome thousands of displaced neighbors from the devastated Gulf Coast into our Atlanta metro community.

Evacuee families that have been in shelters and extended-stay hotels and motels are now beginning to move to more permanent housing and apartments in our region. They may stay in Atlanta for months or even permanently.

These families need government's physical and financial help, but they also need good neighbors to help them adapt to life in a new place — for the short or long term.

Whether your congregation is already assisting directly with this massive effort or you are considering how to get involved, we have developed a document that may be of use to you. Our Hurricane Evacuee Relocation: A Guide for Congregations in the Atlanta Metro Community is designed to help us all serve as "Atlanta friends and family" for people displaced by the hurricane. The Guide for Congregations includes information on:

How to identify an individual evacuee or a family of evacuees who need your help

  • Psychological, emotional, and spiritual impacts of homelessness and poverty
  • Community resources to aid evacuees
  • Additional topics.

The Guide for Congregations will be useful in various ways, including, for example, helping you to navigate through the host of agencies and organizations available to assist evacuees.

For the most current information in the Finding Resources Section, visit www.unitedwayatl.org. All other updates to the document will be posted on our website at www.faithandthecity.org.

We hope that congregations and other groups, with the aid of this Guide and other resources, will be able to offer assistance as quickly and effectively as possible. However, congregations and other groups that do need assistance to get started should contact the Faith And The City Mentor A Family Program.

Finally, whether you are working directly with evacuees or involved in another way, we applaud your commitment to serve those who are most in need during one of the worst natural disasters in our history.
