September 11 Interfaith Service Hosted by Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta, September 11, 2002

The Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta hosted a public interfaith service recalling the courage and unity exemplified by individuals, communities, and the nation in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The service encouraged metro-area residents to reflect on how we can reach out to our neighbors from other ethnic backgrounds and faith traditions, help one another to heal, and reject the forces that would divide us as a people, a nation, and a global community.

The "Service of Remembrance, Reflection, and Healing" was held at 8:30 a.m. in the Horizon Sanctuary of Ebenezer Baptist Church, 400 Auburn Avenue. Speakers included Georgia Governor Roy Barnes, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, and Ebenezer's Rev. Dr. Joseph L. Roberts Jr. Clergy and lay participants included leaders from a range of faith traditions, including Baha'i, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism.

The service, which was free and open to the public, drew a crowd of 800 to 1,000, as well as local and national media attention. It was broadcast live on Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters network cable channels.

The Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta, launched in early 2002, is a not-for-profit organization of clergy and lay members representing various faith traditions and sharing a commitment to interfaith dialogue, understanding, and cooperation throughout the 20-county Atlanta metropolitan region.
