The disease known today as AIDS was first reported in the United States in 1981.

More than 750,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the U.S. over the past 20 years.

To date, nearly 440,000 Americans have died from AIDS.

An estimated 800,000 to 900,000 Americans are living with HIV/AIDS.

An estimated one-half to two-thirds of people living with AIDS are not in regular treatment; as many as one-third do not know they are HIV positive.

Georgia, with more than 22,000 reported cases of AIDS, ranks among the nation's 10 states and territories with the largest number of reported cases.

Atlanta, with nearly 16,000 reported cases of AIDS, ranks among the nation's 10 metropolitan areas with the largest number of reported cases.
