Minorities account for majority in
one in 10 counties

Public Agenda Alert
August 9, 2007

Non-whites now account for the majority in one out of 10 counties in the nation, according to a new Census Bureau report. That figure includes one-third of the most-populous counties in the country. Researchers attribute the greater diversity to the spread of immigration and the increasing suburbanization of blacks and Hispanics.

The public is quite conflicted on the impact of immigration and many hold positive and negative attitudes about legal immigration simultaneously. Six in 10 Americans say immigration is a good thing for the U.S. Yet Americans are divided on whether the U.S. should encourage minorities to blend into American culture or maintain their own culture.
