FATC TV forum host Steen “The Newslady” Miles pens childhood memoir

Press Release

December 31, 2003

Veteran journalist and former state Senator Steen “The Newslady” Miles has written a childhood memoir entitled “Teenie: “Newslady in Training.” Described by reviewer and relationship expert Dr. Joyce Morley-Ball as a “must read” Teenie chronicles the childhood of Miles growing up in the 50’s and 60’s in the small northern Indiana college town of South Bend. Morley-Ball goes on to say, “the book gives credence to the strength of the African-American man as a formidable individual, a dedicated and sincere husband, a proud responsible father and an all-around man.”

There is an inevitable clash of cultures between Teenie and her parents who are products of depression era, segregated rural Mississippi. Teenie initially expresses her anger over racism, sexism, colorism and classism by striking back at her tormentors. Her father, a Baptist preacher, lovingly but firmly holds tight the reins on his wild young filly who by amazing grace is transformed into quite the thoroughbred. Against the backdrop of the social revolution of the late 50’s and early sixties, the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions that will have you laughing, crying and even angry as you experience the true life experiences of Teenie.

Bishop Jim Swilley of Church in the Now of Conyers, Ga. described the book as “taking you by the hand and transforming you from a casual observer into an absolute member of the family….” He adds, “It’s a daughter’s valentine to a father whose short, but well-spent life should be an example to fathers everywhere and a confirmation that all things really do work together for the good of them who love God.”

“January first is my late father’s birthday, said author Steen Miles. The timing of the release of this long-overdue memoir is impeccable. This book is about faith, family and friends served up as a slice of American pie. I was blessed with two wonderful parents, both of whom lived short, but incredible lives. Family is indeed love’s first classroom.”

Steen Miles is an Associate minister at the Greenforest Baptist Church in Decatur and is host of Faith and the City Forum, a weekly talk show on Atlanta cable television that explores current events and public policy from diverse faith perspectives. She was a long-time Emmy-award winning reporter/anchor for WXIA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Atlanta.

Teenie: “Newslady in Training” is published by Orman Press of Lithonia. To order books, arrange book signings and speaking engagements contact Orman Press at 770 808-0999 or the author Steen Miles at 770 981-6769. The book will be available in most major bookstores in February.
