Harvey K. Newman, Ph.D., former Faith And The City program director at Columbia Theological Seminary, has been appointed to a three-year term as chair of the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies (PAUS) in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University.
Newman began his career at GSU in 1971, serving in the Dean's Office of the College of Urban Life. He was chair of the Department of Urban Studies in the College of Public and Urban Affairs from 1981 until 1987. His research has focused on Atlanta-area issues such as the city's use of tourism as an economic development policy and nonprofit organizations in the metropolitan area.
For many years Newman taught courses in the undergraduate and graduate urban policy studies degree programs. More recently, he has been involved in the Nonprofit Studies Program as well as the development of the new core courses in the Bachelor of Public Policy degree. At present, Newman is team teaching the Policy Leadership course with Dr. Michael Mescon and is offering a new class called "Citizenship, the Community, and the Public Service." As a resident of the Old Fourth Ward, Newman enjoys city life, and looks forward to the challenge of providing leadership for the Department.
