On January 18, Georgia State University recognized a member of the Faith And The City family, Harvey Newman, Ph.D., with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Torch of Peace Award for faculty at the University’s 24th Annual Convocation honoring the slain civil rights leader. Dr. Newman serves as professor of urban policy studies at the University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and is a former director of the Faith And The City Program at Columbia Theological Seminary.
The award was given for Dr. Newman’s "consistent and sustained commitment to advancing an understanding of the Atlanta community on issues of race, and to using that knowledge to improve the quality of life for all." The citation goes on to state, "Because of his extensive knowledge of urban history, civil rights, race relations, leadership, and politics, Dr. Newman is able to foster a classroom environment that facilitates open communication about what are often difficult issues. His willingness to examine the hard lessons of racial and urban history has allowed students to go beyond theory and to begin to address 'real world' problems and understand possible solutions." Harvey is the first faculty member from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies to receive the MLK Torch of Peace Award.
Rev. Dr. Newman gained experience as a pastor while earning the Master of Divinity Degree from Duke University. He holds a doctorate from Emory University where he specialized in Church History. Dr. Newman has published a book on policy history in Atlanta and authored numerous articles on topics such as economic development and church/city relations. He has taught in the field of urban policy studies for more than 30 years and has served in a variety of community and professional activities.
“We congratulate Harvey on receiving the Martin Luther King Jr. Torch of Peace Award,” said Faith And The City Executive Director Doug Gatlin, “and, more important, we thank him for his many years of dedicated commitment to education and to community that this honor recognizes.”
