RCCA’s Pastors Breakfast to recognize historic 1957 Manifesto on Racial Beliefs

Faith And The city e.NL
October 5, 2007

The Regional Council of Churches of Atlanta will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic 1957 Pastors’ Manifesto on Racial Beliefs, which was initiated by the RCCA’s predecessor organization, the Christian Council of Atlanta. The celebration will include several pastors who signed the document and their families. Tom Key of Theatrical Outfit will present a reading from a recently commissioned play by Lauren Gunderson about the publication of the Manifesto. Written and signed by leaders of the Christian Council and published by Editor Ralph McGill in the Atlanta Constitution, the Manifesto declared that Christians have a responsibility to speak out against hatred, violence, and oppression, and expressed the faith’s belief in the equal worth of every person. At RCCA’s monthly Pastors Breakfast, the organization will recall its leadership role and the courage of congregations that stood up for justice in those difficult days. The event is scheduled for Oct. 25, at 7:30 am, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 634 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta 30308. RSVP to Ethel Ware Carter at ecarter@rccatl.org or 404.523.5554, ext 231.
