Truth, trust and conversion: An interfaith conversation

The Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta (FAMA) will hold its next assembly on Wednesday evening, April 5, at 7:30 p.m.  at Central Congregational United Church of Christ, 2676 Clairmont Road, NE, Atlanta, GA.

The program will feature an interfaith discussion about the phenomenon of conversion in the context of building interfaith relationships. A professional translator will sign this program for those who are hearing-impaired.

The panel will consist of Imam Ibrahim Pasha, associate imam at the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam, Dr. Uma Majmudar, author and university lecturer from the Hindu Temple, Rabbi Joshua Lesser, rabbi of Congregation Bet Haverim, and Rev. Gilbert Friend-Jones, senior minister of Central Congregational UCC. The moderator will be Ms. Gloria Frisch, a local activist who is involved in a variety of Jewish and interfaith activities.

While adherents of some religions believe that their particular faith is absolutely superior, others embrace a fundamental attitude of tolerance. Some regard it as their spiritual duty to seek new members and converts aggressively, while others shun any form of proselytism. But all religious communities have developed ways to welcome and incorporate the “stranger” or serious inquirer into their own faith and practices.

This panel will explore the impact of interfaith relationships on attitudes and practices of conversion within our faith communities, as well as the impact of proselytizing on building interfaith trust.

Congregation Bet Haverim and Central Congregational UCC will co-sponsor a reception following the dialogue.  Free and open to the public. Call for information 404.633.4505.
